Sports Premium
The Government is providing funding directly to primary school headteachers to spend on improving the quality of sport and PE for all their children. The funding is ring-fenced and can only be spent on sport and PE provision in schools. The amount of PE and sport funding which schools receive is based upon the number of children they have in Years 1-6.
When a school receives an Ofsted Inspection, they will assess how schools spend their PE and sports funding. Governors and the schools’ Improvement Partner will also ask about and assess how the funding is spent in between Ofsted inspections.
Detailed information about PE and sports funding for Primary Schools can be found at: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/pe-and-sport-premium-for-primary-schools
PURPOSE OF FUNDING
Schools must use the funding to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of PE and sport they offer.
This means that you should use the premium to:
- Develop or add to the PE and sport activities that your school already offers
- Make improvements now that will benefit pupils joining the school in future years
For example funding can be used to:
- Hire qualified sports coaches to work with teachers
- Provide existing staff with training or resources to help them teach PE and sport more effectively
- Introduce new sports or activities and encourage more pupils to take up sport
- Support and involve the least active children by running or extending school sports clubs, holiday clubs and Change4Life clubs
- Run sport competitions
- Increase pupils’ participation in the School Games
- Run sports activities with other schools
There are some things which the PE and Sports Premium Funding is not allowed to be spent on. These are:
- Employ coaches or specialist teachers to cover planning preparation and assessment (PPA) arrangements - these should come out of your core staffing budgets
- Teach the minimum requirements of the national curriculum - including those specified for swimming (or, in the case of academies and free schools, to teach your existing PE curriculum)
HOW WILL WE BE SPENDING THE FUNDING AND WHO WILL BENEFIT?
The staff, children and governors at Foxfield Primary all agree that the money must be used so that:
- All children benefit regardless of sporting ability,
- Staff have access to resources and training opportunities, plus continued professional development to improve the quality of teaching and learning in physical education,
- Children are exposed to a range of traditional and non-traditional sports and health enhancing activities through the curriculum, clubs and school visits.
- Children use sports to help them develop learning behaviours and skills which help them in their classrooms.
HOW OUR SPORTS PREMIUM FUND WAS SPENT IN THE YEAR 2020-2021 AND THE IMPACT IT HAS HAD
PE and school sport play a very important part in the life of Foxfield. We believe that PE and school sport contribute to the holistic development of our children and through participation, our children build and learn more about our key values such as respect, cooperation and kindness for themselves and others.
The sports premium awarded to Foxfield for the year 2020/21 was £21,220. The funding has been spent on a membership to the PE & School Sport Network (http://lpessn.org.uk/), membership to Association for Physical Education (https://www.afpe.org.uk/), specialist after-school sports delivery, repairs and maintenance to existing sporting facilities in school, new equipment, swimming support, enrichment opportunities for children, sports kits for children so they can identify with being part of the Foxfield team and CPD opportunities for staff.
We have used part of our sports premium to fund a variety of exciting clubs that reach a range of interests of our children while also highlighting the skills and interests of our staff. Extra-curricular opportunities have always been important to our parent community: through engaging with parents we identified that parents require clubs to be engaging, educational and enriching. For this reason we designed a menu that reflected the broad and balanced curriculum, with a focus on skills for life which were enhanced to excite and inspire! All clubs have received a high level of interest, resulting in us establishing a waiting list as well as being able to extend the provision to more pupils
Enrichment
As well as extra-curricular clubs, this year we have offered various enrichment opportunities for children across the school to promote a lifelong love of physical activity and sport. · Signed up to competitions run by the GSSP who run various free competitions across the academic year which children can access and these competitions create pathways to the School Games.
- Charlton Athletic football tickets provided by the Charlton Athletic Community Trust at various points in the year.
- Inter-school competitions across the Royal Borough of Greenwich such as our football fixture against other primary schools.
- Intra-school competitions & Inspire Partnership Cup.
- Providing 1:1 support for those students who need it.
- Regularly taking part in the Special Football League, selecting a range of SEN pupils (cancelled due to COVID but due to resume).
- Increase the variety of population reached with extra-curricular sport e.g. girls.
- Regular clubs include: Taekwondo, Gymnastics (beginners and intermediate), Football and Performing Arts
All clubs are monitored by our PE lead, every six weeks for impact on children’s learning and skills acquired. Regular reports are received from our club leads, on the learning of the children and their attitudes towards the club. We continued to work with professional services to enhance our curriculum, such as our gymnastic sports coach, the work she provided was essential during lockdown and maintained the importance of health, sport and wellbeing for our children who were learning from home or within restricted school bubbles. Some highlights of the 2020-21 academic year include:
- Weekly gymnastics sessions with a professional coach, virtually and in person.
- Swimming lessons for Year 4 for an intensive period, which have shown to bring high impact on swimming abilities. This ensured that the statutory number of children were able to swim the minimum amount of length, but also allowed for a deepening of confidence for those who can already swim, but need to develop further.
- Integrating and sharing lesson plans and a new curriculum with partnership schools.
- Our PE Leader meets every half term with other PE leaders within the Inspire Partnership; where they discuss good practice, areas of development, ideas for improvement, events and competitions, etc… including how to drive PE during the remote periods.
- A variety of sports are made available to the children in after school clubs including football and gymnastics. These are always extremely popular with a waiting list.
We look forward to another incredible year of PE and Sport, our priorities for 2021/22 include:
- ensuring that all children are receiving high quality opportunities to participate and develop their skills in a range of sports and games.
- embedding sporting interventions for targeted children to improve social, physical and emotional skills.
- continuing to develop our lunchtime and after school club provision, as well as providing more opportunities to improve physical health and wellbeing e.g. healthy eating, cookery and gardening, and targeting our offer.
